A year later!

ahhh! i cant believe im blogging again. i cant really be sure why im doing this. i guess i miss rambling about uninteresting things. i know nobody really cares to read this anyway (except Tina...i know she'll be reading this).....so i can pretty much say whatever is on my mind. usually incoherent things. it's been almost a year since my last post....actually not as long ago as it feels. so much has happened since then! of course, i dont feel like talking about most of it....so how about just the most important thing?:

My job is way cooler than your job.

You can argue all you want. there's just no way you're convincing me that your job is cooler than mine. it's not happening.

sure, there's some bad things about it. I wear a lame-o uniform that is 3 sizes too big for me because United doesnt want people to know that we have waists....or a body at all. I do get phone calls in the middle of the night and I do sometimes wake up for work at 2:30 in the morning.

yes, im most commonly referred to as "hey", "miss", or "excuse me." I do, in fact, often work with crabby 50+ year old women who have been flying for 30 years and have to literally paint on their face.

Sure, it gets old having bags shoved at me by 40 year old men who think im somehow stronger and more capable of stowing their luggage. and ya....sometimes it's a bit discouraging that people dont appreciate you. (I bet you didnt know your flight attendant attended 8 weeks of rigorous training...class six days a week, sometimes 12 hours a day. Plus, emergency procedures training during which your flight attendant learned how to safely and properly evacuate EVERY type of airplane his/her airline flies in about 20 seconds. He/she can operate a door/slide/raft, knows how to handle a hijacking situation, can build a bomb stack, is certified in CPR, first aid and AED, learned how to keep a straight face and a calm attitude during a crisis......and can probably save your life.)

but suuuuuuuure go ahead and keep talking to your neighbor about your busy, busy day at the airport during the live safety demonstration. because YOU know everything about flying. and we're just a bunch of dumb girls in ugly dresses showing you how to use a seatbelt.

like i said....there's some negative things about it. but the positives far outweigh anything else. in what other job can you be in China one day and London the very next? sleep in Orlando one night and then clear over to LA for another night? Stay in nice hotels that you probably couldnt afford if you were paying on your own (I grew up a Holiday Inn girl). And if you don't like the people you're working with....all you have to do is smile, tough it out for (at the most) 14 hours....and you'll probably never fly with them again. you always work with different people. you get paid to smile, be nice, and wheel a cart down the aisle handing out drinks and food. i mean........seriously. im getting paid. it almost feels like im ripping someone off.

aside from all of that...things are going well. i love chicago. i've always been a city girl at heart, and living here definitely feels right. i have no plans of moving away from the city anytime soon. unless, of course, it's to move to a better city. (ahem, New York).

i finally learned how to parallel park, which doesnt necessarily mean im good at it or that im able to do it in the first attempt (try 5 or 6), but at least now i dont have to drive around in search of a spot that is completely secluded from other automobiles.

im able to use the 10 words of spanish that i actually retained from my college days (and those words would be the numbers one through ten) at my neighborhood Dollar General, where no one speaks English. Sr. Romero would be oh-so-proud.

im more exposed to homeless people than ever before...like the guy who sleeps in the same corner of my subway station with a stack of newspapers, and the other bearded guy who plays a wooden flute. actually, i dont see how this is a good thing....

ive become much more independent. i actually enjoy cleaning now. and doing dishes. it's all really weird. maybe one day i'll be fully domesticated. hark! do i hear a sewing machine??

i've learned to live without relying on cable TV. that's right, no more A&E, no more What Not To Wear....no HGTV or reruns of Dick Van Dyke. This girl is all about basic cable....hence, this girl is all about NOT watching tv. because trust me, there is nothing on basic cable worth watching. (aside from grey's and american idol, of course. ok and supernanny).

i've learned to rely less on my car = i've become less lazy. in the past, the thought of WALKING to the store would have been like suggesting i chew my own arm off ("Walk?? What do you mean...walk?"). But I do it all the time now. unless, of course, im going somewhere far like the mall. other than that, it's walking for me. to the store, to the train station, to the mailbox. things of this nature. thank the heavens for my ipod.

I am no longer surrounded by farming/tractors/hunting/farm animals/camo/carhart clothing/huge trucks. i think we can all agree on the positivity in that one.

in general, life is good. scratch that. life is great. i wouldnt have it any other way right now. im so glad im not teaching, because i can almost guarantee you i'd be stressed out and miserable. just reading my old blogs about student teaching makes me want to travel back in time a year and give myself a hug.

who knows when i'll write again. this may just be a fluke. until next time.
