Tuesday night is trivia night. We go to a bar called State over by DePaul and participate in the trivia challenge. they have different categories, ask a random trivia question over the mic, your team writes down your answer and at the end of the round you turn your paper in. the winning team wins 800 dollars. they ask really random things like "what year did the california gold rush begin?", "What was the title of the Grateful Dead's debut album?", "What was the name of the girl Steve Urkel on Family Matters was in love with?" and "how many colors are in the subway restaurant logo?" they also have a picture round where you have to identify the pictures (last night was pictures of fast food cheeseburgers and you have to identify what restaurant they come from). and a music round, where they play about 10 seconds of a song and you have to identify title and artist. tons of fun.
they also have a sports round.
now...usually we have boys on our team. but last night, the boys could not come. so it was just us girls. 5 of us. before the game, we discussed how we'll probably get 0 points in the sports category.
and then they asked the first sports question. i sat in silence, not even really understanding the question. something about a guy who got traded for something in basketball or something and what team did he come from and something or other. way over my head. i expected the other girls to be confused as well.
but then the girls started like....throwing out names. and like...discussing it. like they KNEW what they were talking about. i was bewildered. i mean.....am i supposed to know this stuff????
i felt like a kid who just found out the easter bunny isnt real. or that feeling you get when you show up to a class and realize a really important paper was due and you forgot to do it. but everyone else in the class is sitting there with THEIR papers, ready to turn in. and they even have really cute cover pages and they bound it together in an attractive folder.
you feel disappointed...isolated...embarrassed. really stupid. like you should have known better. there's this whole world out there of sports, and apparently im the only one who doesnt know anything about it. i thought all girls were there with me. but no. im alone.
you mean to tell me all those times i sat with a remote-hogging boyfriend as he watched ESPN, i was supposed to like.......pay attention????? huh???
im so confused.
