Today is day 2 of being on call and not being used. last night i was certain i'd get a call in the middle of the night since i wasnt used yesterday and therefore i'd be bumped to the top of the list. but i was wrong, apparently. because here it is, night time. and no call. which is ok, i guess. except im starting to go stir crazy.
this afternoon i felt i couldnt just sit around anymore. so i decided to take the train downtown by the lake. i was determined to begin my great american novel. i felt the scenery would give some inspiration.
pretty much the only thing that came about from this writing session was me determining i have ADD. because im incapable of focusing on one single thought. im just all over the place. which i guess should have been obvious to me since i cant even blog coherently. curses to this brain.
i picked a spot on a nice grassy knoll somewhere between soldier field and navy pier. and by knoll i mean hill. i just wanted to say knoll. listening to my ipod and with pen in hand, i started watching all the happy families walking by. then i realized it was memorial day and i was pretty much the only person alone. i felt sorry for myself for about 15 seconds until i realized how awesome i am and why wouldnt i want to hang out with me.
about 30 seconds after that, i realized i had sat among a huge pile of dog crap. not exactly IN it, but among it. and i had stepped in it. because i just wouldnt be me if i hadn't.
so i was forced to move to a different location on the grassy knoll. did some writing. of course my thoughts wandered. i ended up people watching and just thinking about life and random things. the view was really nice. a little girl about 2-3 years old and her mother walked by. the girl saw me and ran over to me and sat down and proceeded to talk gibberish. i asked her a bunch of questions but she either couldnt speak english or is still too young to speak coherent english. i couldnt tell. i picked a dandelion and gave it to her which made her incredibly excited. she then proceeded to pick clumps of grass and throw it at me. and then eat some.
the mother was not pleased. my bad for starting the whole picking vegetation thing. then the mom told her it was time to go and the girl started crying and refused to get up. so the mom dragged her away as she screamed and cried.
way to go linda.
intent on writing, i turned back to my notebook only to be distracted by a colony of about 80 people on those stand up people mover things. you know. those things that the walking cops use now in the city. you pretty much stand on this little platform with two wheels on either side and hold onto handlebars. and apparently by magic you move forward. because i dont see any other way that it could possibly move on its own. and the whole thing is rather pointless and lazy.
anyways. there were about 80 people on these things, all wearing helmets (because falling the 3 inches to the ground while going 5 mph would hurt. maybe.) and all wearing name tags. i deduced they were all retarded. not to be mean, but what adult without mental retardation would agree to riding around town on those things with name tags on. it's just nonsensical.
i laughed out loud, to myself of course because i was all by myself and had nobody to laugh with. (dont feel bad for me, im awesome). turned back to my writing. wrote for maybe 30 seconds until i saw a boat driving by and then that started me on thinking about how i want a boat one day. because how killer would that be? then instead of sitting on a grassy knoll by myself, i could just randomly go boating by myself. just hang out in the middle of the lake. drop anchor. listen to tunes. soak up the sun...and the awesomeness of my boat.
then i gave up on writing since clearly it was just a doomed mission anyway. walked back to the train. got on. a mother and son came on shortly after me with large suitcases in tow. i knew from the instant i saw them that they hated each other. and about 30 seconds later i was proven correct when they started yelling at each other. while everyone listened. because pretty much nobody talks on the train. except these two. they yelled.
and now here i sit. i could say that i'll probably get a phone call in the middle of the night, but clearly i have no talent when it comes to predicting such things. all i can hope is that i dont get an early check-in because i am not a morning person and im just so much more pleasant later in the day.
that's it.
